words from our community: kara udicious

Meet Kara. She is a beloved student here at Yoga Home. Kara has taken over five hundred classes!

I live in Rosemont with my husband Steve and have two fabulous daughters who try to keep me “current.” I work at a preschool in Gladwyne, The Wetherill School, a lively and joyous place of business.

Likes: besides yoga, being on a bike, Ardmore Music Hall, the current grain bowl trend, lattes, and the Jersey Shore.

Dislikes: reality tv (I cringe), brunch, elevator silence (my family accuses me of being overly chatty with strangers), and Warrior 1 pose (sorry!).

How did you get into the practice of yoga? Years ago my dear friend Stacie took some classes and encouraged me to join her. My first teacher asked the class to commit to “coming to the mat” 60 times before we made a final decision about yoga. I followed that advice and was pretty much hooked a few months in. I felt that yoga made me physically and mentally stronger.

What does Yoga Home mean to you? I think Kerri, Maura and all the staff at YH have done a tremendous job cultivating this special yoga community. To me, it feels welcoming, safe, a place where I am encouraged to engage with classmates and the outside community, somewhere I am asked to accept as well as challenge myself.

What is your favorite style of yoga and why? My favorite style of yoga is Vinyasa. I like to move and be led through unfamiliar sequences. I also like the way Vinyasa classes lead up to a challenge of trying a new or advanced pose.

Who inspires you? The students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School who founded March for Our Lives. I’m inspired by the way such young people have the courage and ability to mobilize people around the world – fighting for improvements to gun regulations. Changes that are proven to save lives.

Of all of Yoga Home’s core values (Connection, Acceptance, Love, Community, and Growth) which do you connect with most? Love is unbeatable. Community is a close second. The connection with others and what builds out of that is energizing and powerful.
