Adaptive Yoga

Because yoga is for EVERY body. We make the practice accessible for all.

At Yoga Home, we believe yoga is for EVERY body. Two of our classes, Yoga for All ~ Adaptive and Chair Yoga are specifically tailored to individuals who may have physical limitations, chronic pain or injury, and are seeking the healing benefits of yoga.

Both offer small group instruction, minimize (or eliminate) transfers from standing to the floor, and make use of chairs, blocks and other props to make the postures more accessible.

Expect To Gain:

  • Increased strength, balance and flexibility —both mental and physical.
  • Rhythm, an inward sense of direction and the ability to move through life in a more integrated way.
  • The capacity to live more fully within the body.
  • An enhanced ability to manage stress.
  • A deepened sense of connection with others.
  • Hope and a renewed sense of freedom.

Our skilled instructors have had specific training to create practices appropriate for those dealing with a variety of medical issues, including chronic pain, back issues, stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, cerebral palsy, concussion, traumatic brain injury, vision loss, hearing loss and other issues. You’ll find a mix of ages and abilities in these classes. Whether you’re recovering from an injury or navigating chronic health issues, these classes are a pathway to mental and physical wellness.

Our studio is ADA compliant, wheelchair and mobility device friendly.  We have a barrier free entry, accessible restroom and staff ready to support you with whatever you need.

Donations to our Adaptive Yoga Program are gratefully accepted, as they allow us to bring this work to more in need.  You can donate here.

Yoga for All ~ Adaptive Yoga

Everyone is welcome to this class – able bodied students as well as those working with limitations.  It is ideal for those seeking the physical and mental benefits of yoga who have limited mobility or balance as a result of the aging process, injury or other medical issues.  This class unites us all – while our postures may take different forms, we’ll focus on the sensation and benefits of the practice.  It’s a great way to be in community and stay connected.  Caregivers for individuals who benefit from assistance with transfers and other needs are welcome to this class, free of charge.

Chair Yoga

Chair yoga is a gentle form of yoga that is practiced seated on a chair or standing using a chair for support. It is ideal for those seeking the physical and mental benefits of yoga who have limited mobility or balance as a result of the aging process, injury or other medical issues. Expect to experience the many benefits, including stress reduction, increased flexibility and strength, and cultivating the mind-body connection.

Additional Offerings

Teaching Chair & Adaptive Yoga Training – Making Yoga Accessible

This Training is open to all who have an interest in helping individuals with disabilities more fully explore the mind-body-spirit connection. Yoga teachers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, recreation therapists, educators, caregivers, parents and individuals with and without disabilities are all welcome.  Please see our events page for our next Training.

Yoga for Caregivers

Come set aside the needs of others and allow yourself to drop into a safe space of taking care of your needs, body, mind and heart. We’ll explore pathways to releasing stress in areas of the body caregivers tend to overwork, including shoulders, neck and back. The second part of our class will be a restorative practice, with emphasis on releasing all physical effort so the body can completely rest, the nervous system can decompress and the mind can enjoy space to roam. You’ll leave feeling empowered, energized and ready to resume your critical caregiver role with new strength, vitality and peace. Appropriate for all levels, including those with no prior yoga experience. Check the events page for our next Yoga for Caregivers event.
