words from our community: allen dalton

Meet Allen. He is a beloved student here at Yoga Home. Some of his favorite classes are Yin with Maura Manzo and Gentle with Beth Heed. Allen started practicing with us over a year ago!

How does yoga bring you mental clarity?
I have found that my practice has created a calmer, more relaxed and focused approach to life. During my sessions I am not aware of anyone else except the instructor and the expected result of the session.

Why is your yoga practice so important to you?
I have recently retired and wanted something (an activity) to look forward to. If it became routine I would probably eventually stop. Yoga has been something that I look forward to and totally enjoy. I try to attend 3-4 sessions a week. My practice has created a more relaxed me. I also believe my health (blood pressure) has improved significantly as a result of the sessions.

You have been practicing for over a year now, which is truly an accomplishment! In this past year what have you learned about yourself through this practice?
I now realize that I can detach myself from daily stress by concentrating and actually reduce emotional reactions to daily situations. This is something I believe is the best result of a regular practice. Plus, I just feel better!

Out of our core values- connection, acceptance, community, love and growth. What value do you identify with the most and why?
Connection would be the primary core value. I have connected with myself and become more curious about my contributions to the community via volunteering. I am aware of the need to give back. It is now my commitment not just a thought that gets forgotten during daily routines.

What is your favorite type of class and why?
Yin is absolutely my favorite. For me, it is total relaxation and focusing on the moment. After my first class I started laughing. I couldn’t believe how much I enjoyed (and continue to enjoy) this type of yoga.

What will you tell someone who is hesitant to start practicing yoga?
There is NO reason to hesitate. Take advantage of the one month unlimited sessions at a reduced rate and expose yourself to as many practices as possible. There are so many choices and accommodating schedules (days, evenings and weekends). Determine what you enjoy the most and then move forward in making your life more enjoyable. I am truly happy I made this decision.
