Teaching Chair and Adaptive Yoga – Making Yoga Accessible For All

Making yoga accessible for all is our mission at Yoga Home.  We’re building a community of teachers for Chair and Adaptive Yoga classes.  Creating a safe, supportive space where individuals of all ages and abilities are free to experience the practice of yoga will be the focus of this training.

You’ll learn to modify yoga postures and breathing techniques for individuals with varying physical limitations. We’ll explore the benefits derived from various postures and how we can adapt these postures for any body.

Adaptive and Chair yoga are appropriate for many, including those with mild to severe limitations resulting from health issues or the aging process.  We’ve taught yoga to students recovering from hip/knee replacement, spinal fusion and other surgeries; as well as those with Parkinson’s, Traumatic Brain Injury, Cerebral Palsy, Developmental Delay, Autism and many other diagnoses.

 Yoga benefits students by creating:

  • Increased strength, balance and flexibility — both mental and physical
  • Rhythm, an inward sense of direction and the ability to move through life in a more integrated way
  • The capacity to live more fully within the body
  • An enhanced ability to manage stress
  • A deepened sense of connection with others

You’ll also learn how to construct Chair and Adaptive Yoga Classes that are appropriate for mixed levels and abilities.

This Training is open to all who have an interest in helping individuals with physical disabilities more fully explore the mind-body-spirit connection. Yoga teachers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, recreation therapists, educators, caregivers, parents and individuals with and without disabilities are all welcome.

Yoga Teachers will re-think how they teach asana (postures), enriching their teaching of other styles of the practice.  PTs, OTs, Educators and others will learn techniques they can easily bring to their classrooms.

This weekend intensive will include lecture/discussion, Adaptive and Chair yoga classes and partner work.  Attending in-person is highly recommended, but we recognize this may not be possible for some due to health needs, geography or other constraints.  A Livestream option is also available.   Training is limited to 15 students in-studio to allow for a more intimate and COVID safe experience.  All in-studio participants must be vaccinated.
