Starting a Yoga Practice

You’ve heard all the benefits of starting a yoga practice, but not sure where to start? We’ve got you covered! Here are some simple tips to get you on your way:

ABOUT THE PRACTICE

  • Consider your goals – are you looking to move with more ease, strengthen and tone, find more calm, be connected in community?  All of these are benefits of yoga, and many more. Getting clear on what you’re seeking will help you find the class style that’s right for you. A few class styles we suggest for those just getting started:
    • Basics – alignment based, stationary class with a focus on foundational poses.
    • Gentle – slow, easy movement with a focus on stress release and gentle stretching.
    • Restorative – long held, passive postures to support deep relaxation, tension release, and stress relief.
    • Slow Flow – focuses on alignment, longer held poses and a balance of ease and effort
    • Yin – designed to stress the connective tissues of the body within their natural range of motion, over an extended period of time.
    • Yoga for All/Adaptive – postures are made accessible for every body, whether seated, standing or coming down to the floor; small class size with ample time for questions.
    • More vigorous practices – Vinyasa, Power Flow – beginners are welcome in these classes, but know we will move quickly from pose to pose.
  • Dress for the class you select. Some classes will have more vigorous movement, athletic clothing may serve you well. Other classes may be less intense with longer time for rest – dress in layers.
  • Typically yoga is practiced barefoot. If you prefer to wear socks, we suggest having socks with grip to prevent slipping.
  • A good yoga mat will prevent you from slipping and help you feel more secure. We can help you select a mat based on your needs – we carry Jade Yoga Mats and others. Blocks and other props are often used in class as well – you’re welcome to use ours or buy your own in our studio store. You’re welcome to borrow one of our mats at your first class.
  • See if it’s possible to get to class at least once per week – maybe even twice. Building a consistent practice is helpful.
We also teach a “Yoga for Beginners” 4 week series to help those getting started. This series is offered monthly – see our EVENTS page for details.

We know it can feel intimidating starting a new practice and are committed to supporting new students. You’ll find welcoming, encouraging teachers who provide variations of postures so beginner students can practice alongside those with more experience.

Most importantly, remember we all had to start somewhere. Give yourself a pat on the back for taking the step of getting started! And if giving yourself a pat on the back isn’t possible because your shoulder is tight…well…we’ll work on that in class! 🙂
