february community initiative – suicide prevention

“What mental health needs is more sunlight, more candor, more unashamed conversation.” -Glenn Close

For February, Yoga Home’s community focus is mental health awareness and suicide prevention. We are working with Q.P.R., an organization known for its Gatekeeper Suicide Prevention Program: QUESTION, PERSUADE, and REFER – to help the members of our community facilitate open and unashamed discussion about depression and thoughts of suicide.

According to the American Psychological Association, suicide is the fourth leading cause of death for adults over 35 and the second leading cause of death for children as young as 10 years old (Weir 2019). Q.P.R. has reported that 46% of adults of participate in their Gatekeeper Training have been able to prevent a suicide within six months using their method simply by teaching participants to:

  • Recognize the warning signs
  • Ask someone about suicidal thoughts
  • Offer and connect to help

As yogis, we would like to make it part of our regular practice to support, not only ourselves, but also each other when we come to our mats. We want to bring a spirit of compassion and openness to our space that many who suffer from mental health problems may not see in the real world.

At Yoga Home, yoga is for every body; it is also for every mind.
