Introducing the Yoga Home Book Club

**UPDATE: We’ve received tremendous feedback about the launch of our Book Club….as well as the request for more time to read and contemplate the book. We’d like to honor that request. We will postpone our February meeting until March. Enjoy the book! We’ll pick a new date soon!

“At Yoga Home, our mission is to educate and empower individuals through the art and science of yoga, engage in sustainable community outreach and support the spiritual growth and evolution of all our members.”

When Maura and I wrote our vision and mission for Yoga Home, it was important to us that we think about what individuals in our community need. Creating opportunities for people to connect, discuss, reflect and build relationships was key.
The Yoga Home Book Club is a natural fit for us. Each month, a teacher will select a text that has provided inspiration and insight for their personal practice, as well as their teachings. We’ll provide opportunity to gather in our physical space, as well as allowing an online discussion to evolve. This month, I’m kicking off our Book Club with one of my favorites Living Your Yoga, Finding the Spiritual in Everyday Life by Judith Lasater, Ph.D., P.T.

About this Book

Living Your Yoga is just that – practical, easy to implement wisdom on how to incorporate your yoga practice every day. The book is divided into three main sections: Awakening Awareness: Yoga within Yourself, Widening the Circle: Yoga and Relationships, and Embracing All Life: Yoga in the World. Individual chapters are dedicated to issues we all navigate during the course of our lives: Spiritual Seeking, Self-Judgement, Perspective, Fear, Suffering, Connection, Love and more. Each chapter includes Judith’s personal reflections, which are extremely relatable, suggestions for daily practice, and mantras for daily living.

Why this Book?
I chose this book to launch our Book Club, as it’s a book I turn to again and again in my personal practice and teachings. I find it tremendously reassuring to know that whatever I’m experiencing, from being challenged with perspective to losing patience to feeling the need to control situations; there is wisdom in this book. I love that Judith pulls elements of the Yoga Sutras and Bhagavad Gita and makes them accessible. It’s a text I quickly read cover to cover when I first purchased it…and now savor individual chapters when I need them. My copy is highlighted, marked, dog-eared and stickied. It’s a book I’ve given as a gift on more than one occasion and one of the first I ordered for our Yoga Home library.

What does Book Club Involve

We’re looking to create opportunities for people to participate in person as well as virtually. We know not everyone may be able to make it to a meeting, but still would enjoy a ‘discussion’, so I’ll be posting questions on this blog and encourage you to share your thoughts.

  • You can join us at Yoga Home for our Book Club Discussion February 19th at 7:30.
  • Is there a fee? No! Book Club is one of the free, community events we offer at Yoga Home.
  • What if I don’t finish the book before the meeting? Come anyway! No need to have finished the book to enjoy the discussion.
  • Will there be wine at the Book Club meeting? We do sell a variety of juices, smoothies and teas, but alas no wine. You are welcome to BYOB should you choose.
  • What’s the next book we’ll be reading? I don’t know….do you have a suggestion?
  • Where can I purchase the book? In our retail section!

Happy reading and we’ll talk soon! xx Kerri Hanlon, co-founder
