new to yoga class guide

We get a lot of questions and comments from beginner’s just visiting their mat for the first time. “What classes are appropriate for me?”  “I’d love to try yoga but I need to lose weight before I do.” “I’m not flexible, can I do this?” Therefore, we wanted to put together a guide as to what classes may be best suited for a beginner.

At Yoga Home we believe deeply, that yoga is for every body. You do not have to be a certain shape, color, or height to benefit from the practice. You don’t have to be flexible or be able to touch your toes to practice yoga! It truly is for every body.

Classes at Yoga Home include asana (poses), adjustments or alignment assistance, and mindfulness. They may also include pranayama (breathing exercise) chanting, mantra, meditation and philosophy. Please notify the teacher at the beginning of class of any injuries you may have including recent surgeries, if you are pregnant and/or if you have preferences in regards to hands-on adjustments.

Basics

Basics is a great option for those just starting their practice. It is an alignment based, stationary class with a focus on foundational poses. Appropriate for beginners, seniors, minor injuries & those looking for something other than Vinyasa (or simply as a refresher on basic alignment principles of the poses). This class is appropriate for students of all ages, including children above the age of 12 who are accompanied by an adult.

Basics class will break down the more popular movements you will find in a traditional Vinyasa class so if and when you are ready to try another class, you will have the foundational poses down!

Gentle

This class uses slow, easy movement, and an emphasis on breathing to guide students into a closer connection with themselves and the world around them. The focus of this class is stress release and gentle stretching. This class is appropriate for students of all levels and ages, including beginners, seniors, and those with injuries.

Slow Flow

After taking a few Basics classes to learn some of the foundational poses, you may want to visit a Slow Flow Class. Similar to Vinyasa, but slower paced, this class focuses on linking breath and movement through the exploration of both basic, and more challenging postures. Appropriate for beginners as a stepping stone to Vinyasa classes, and those looking for a slower paced flow class.

Restorative

After introducing your body to moving in a new way, it’s important to offer appreciation and deep relaxation!  In Restorative you can expect long held, passive postures to support deep relaxation, tension release, and stress relief. Using the assistance of blocks, bolsters and blankets, restorative yoga class works to deeply calm and rest the nervous system, supports the body’s natural healing tendencies and allows the students to experience the poses without having to exert any effort. Appropriate for everyone. A great compliment to a more vigorous practice.
